The cognitive outcome post TBI is affected by numerous injury related factors like severity of brain injury and its subsequent complications, associated injuries to other body regions, and the time scale of recovery from injury. Various studies evaluating the presence of cognitive deficits at admission using MoCA have found patient`s age, severity of injury and educational status to be important factors affecting the patients score 8. MoCA is a freely available tool for use by medical professionals, clinics and hospitals involved in the care of such patients. This screening tool uses various tasks to assess higher-level language abilities, memory and visuospatial and executive functions. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score is a brief assessment tool of global cognitive function which was originally designed for early detection of mild cognitive deficits in patients with Alzheimer disease 7 which has been subsequently validated in different cohorts. There is no single standard easily administrable tool to address these issues in TBI patients. The importance of early assessment of cognitive function post TBI lies in establishing a cognitive prognosis for patients and formulating early intervention plan. In a recent study, TBI has been seen to be associated with later development of dementia and Alzheimer disease 6. The level of resultant cognitive impairment post TBI is seen to correlate with the severity of the brain injury 4, with more grievous injuries resulting in severe and persistent cognitive dysfunction 5. With progressive evolution and introduction of modern monitoring systems and management strategies for TBI, patient survival has increased with concomitant increase in the number of TBI survivors battling with its long-term complications including cognitive dysfunction 3. It affects the physical, psychosocial and cognitive skills in varying degrees thus causing significant deterioration in the quality of life and impairment of social and economic productivity 2. Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) is one of the most important global health issues which constitutes an increasingly common cause of mortality and a leading cause of morbidity in all age group, especially in young adults 1. Applied on TBI population, it reliably detects cognitive impairment in mild TBI, compared to normal controls and also differentiates cognitive disturbances between mild and severe TBI but its ability to differentiate cognitive function between mild and moderate TBI is equivocal. Montreal cognitive assessment Score (MoCA) is a brief screening tool designed to assess various cognitive domains which has been found to be more sensitive than Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score both in Alzheimer disease and subsequently in TBI population. Assessment of cognitive function using classically designed scales is time and resource intensive undertaking which also requires expert neuropsychiatrist referral. Keshav Mishra 1, Devendra Purohit 1*, Somnath Sharma 1ġDepartment of Neurosurgery, SMS Medical College, Jaipur, IndiaĬognitive impairment is a major cause of morbidity and impaired quality of life in traumatic brain Injury (TBI) patients. The MoCA is a brief cognitive screening tool with high sensitivity and specificity for detecting MCI as currently conceptualized in patients performing in the normal range on the MMSE.Montreal cognitive Assessment Score: A Screening Tool for Cognitive Function in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Population MCI as an entity is evolving and somewhat controversial. Specificity was excellent for both MMSE and MoCA (100% and 87%, respectively). In the mild AD group, the MMSE had a sensitivity of 78%, whereas the MoCA detected 100%. Using a cutoff score 26, the MMSE had a sensitivity of 18% to detect MCI, whereas the MoCA detected 90% of MCI subjects. The MoCA and MMSE were administered to all participants, and sensitivity and specificity of both measures were assessed for detection of MCI and mild AD. Ninety-four patients meeting MCI clinical criteria supported by psychometric measures, 93 patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score > or =17), and 90 healthy elderly controls (NC). See, my tablet doesn’t have enough power to allow the Edge unit to draw power upon connecting it, which means you’ll either need a USB “Y” cable (plugged into another USB power source), or a USB hub (also powered). In any event, once you’ve got the apps downloaded, you’re ready to roll. Just search for ANT+ in the Google Play store and you’ll see them all on a singe page.ġ) ANT Radio Service (for watches that normally use ANT Agent)Ģ) ANT USB Service (for watches that normally use ANT Agent)Ĥ) ‘Uploader for Garmin’ App (for non-tablets, i.e. They are the “ANT Radio Service” app, and the “ANT USB Service” app. In addition to the Sportablet app, if you’re downloading from a Garmin FR310XT/FR405/FR405CX/FR410/FR910XT/FR610/FR60/FR70/Swim, you’re also going to need a few other applications from ANT+ from the Google Play store. A lot of this has to do with the lack of standardization on Android, making hardware integration somewhat difficult. More than likely, the support picture is better than it looks. There’s a chart on the app owners website, but I wouldn’t consider it 100% complete. Now I should point out that Android compatibility with the different download scenarios below is a bit of a complex story. Getting data off your Android device (technically either phone or tablet) will require you to download the Sportablet app. So you’re not ‘in the hole’ $50 if it doesn’t work. The good news is that compared to the iPad option, it only costs a $1-2 (or nothing at all) to try it out. I would to upfront note that the Android downloading option is far from perfect. I say “oddly” because when you look at the rest of the sports and device ecosystem on Android, it’s otherwise fairly convoluted (see: Bluetooth Smart on Android). The Android ‘story’ is oddly enough the most complete when it comes to getting stuff off your Garmin. With that, let’s get into it! Android Downloading: But that’s it for solutions that work end to end (inclusive of actually getting the file uploaded to a service via some app). I could likely count on one hand the other devices that will work with some of these solutions: The O-Synce Navi2Coach (USB enumerated worked on Surface RT, but not Android), and the Timex Run Trainer 2.0 (USB enumerated worked on Android and Surface RT). Unless the device enumerates as a USB mass storage device, you’re generally out of luck. The reason I specifically focused on Garmin devices is simple: There’s quite frankly not much support out there for other devices today. Some solutions are straight forward, and some are downright messy. Some platforms have more flexibility than others, as you’ll see. Thus I figured I’d walk through the three major tablet platforms and what your options are on each platform. But the vast majority of fitness devices on the market today don’t enable such scenarios. Some devices such as the Garmin Edge 510 and 810 now allow uploading of workouts via your phone or tablet. Whether that be initial configuration of the device, updating of the unit firmware, or downloading of workouts. It is important to give care towards the transferral of data from the Garmin ANT product to the Garmin Connect, as if you download other content to the device without first transferring the data, all of the said data will not be retained. As it stands today, every GPS device available in the sports and fitness world requires a computer in some capacity. As such, it can be used anytime and anywhere and can be easily utilized on multiple home computers at once without the need for multiple purchases or downloads. This product is a software, so it can be used and downloaded onto your computer without the need for a physical product. So when you’re shopping for a life raft, what may begin as a hunt for a good bargain might quickly evolve into a sky-is-the-limit search for the best life raft money can buy. When you abandon ship, lives are at stake. Their life rafts need to be capable of performing in more significant seas and lower temperatures. However, those cruising offshore (20 miles or more from the coast) and/or transiting colder waters, face shorter survival times. Consequently, a lighter-duty, less-expensive life raft may suit the needs of your crew. In warm, inshore and coastal waters, hypothermia and the risk of being caught out in a heavy gale are less likely. Picking the right life raft for your own needs starts with an evaluation of the risks and the exposure you may encounter. However, through our weeklong evaluation process, we were able to come up with recommendations to help clarify the differences among offshore/ocean-capable life rafts and allow you to better decide which features are most relevant to your circumstances. There is no one life raft that will suit every person or budget. Next month, we’ll take an in-depth look at the results of those tests, but before delving into the details of our findings, we present here a discussion no less important of the considerations that every sailor must weigh when choosing a life raft. We also wanted to see how Elliot, a life raft we did not test last time, would do. This time around, we were curious to see how life rafts built or upgraded to the new standards compared to the ones we tested. 15, 2003) the Winslow Ocean Pro was our favorite, and the Viking RescYou Pro earned Best Buy honors.
